Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona gets the all-star treatment in Pavel Giroud and JuanMa Villar Betancort’s elegant new film. Lecuona is regarded today as the most influential Cuban musician of the 20th century.
In the film, celebrated musicians Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo and Gonzalo Rubalcaba pay tribute to the godfather of contemporary Cuban music.
Chucho Valdés’ take on Lecuona’s music takes us through the master’s afro-cuban Jazz roots straight from the heart of Havana. Michel Camilo reveals the prodigious atmosphere and sophisticated playing of Lecuona from New York City while Gonzalo Rubalcaba creates a majestic fusion between Lecuona’s distinctive composition and flamenco music from Seville in Spain.
The film’s tour de force performances include Valdés, Camilo and Rubalcaba playing Lecuona’s exceptional music with artists like Omara Portuondo, Ana Belén, Raimundo Amador, Esperanza Fernández, Xiomara Laugart, Alfredo Valdes Jr., Alfredo Almendárez (Chocolate), Eglise Gutiérrez, Los muñequitos de Mataznzas and Huberal Herrera. – Andres Castillo
